Consulate General Auckland

The Consulate General in Auckland provides all U.S. consular services in New Zealand:  The Embassy in Wellington is unable to provide consular services.

About Passports

The Consular section in Auckland processes United States passport applications for all New Zealand and the Cook Islands. Currently, processing time for most passports is five to seven working days.

All applicants except those who can submit an undamaged 10 year validity passport that did not expire more than 5 years ago must appear in person at the Consulate to make their passport applications.

Passport applications can no longer be executed before a New Zealand Notary Public.

  • If you would like your passport returned to you by mail, please send in OR bring in a self-addressed courier envelope.
  • If you have any queries or require additional information concerning the procedures for applying for a U.S. passport please contact American Citizens Services - Phone +64 9 303 2724 ext: 2842/2848/2856.  Please be prepared to leave a message on voice mail and we shall respond between the hours of 7.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

Passports issued to minors:

Both parents' consent is required before a passport can be issued to a minor under 16 years. If one parent cannot appear at the Consulate a statement of consent (DS 3053), together with the non-appearing parent’s identification (or notarized copy of their identification) MUST be submitted.

The Department of State requires that such statements of consent be notarized. The statement must give the non-appearing parent's unequivocal and unconditional consent to the issuance of the passport, and must be notarized before foreign notaries or local officials authorized to take acknowledgments and witness signatures. New Zealand qualifies under the Hague Convention to use Justices of the Peace to notarize these statements. Justices of the Peace can be found in all communities within New Zealand.

Note: Changes to U.S. Passport Laws Concerning Children Under 16
Effective February 1, 2008, there was a worldwide change to the way passports are processed for children under the age of 16.
Due to an amendment to the Code of Federal Regulations, the age at which a child no longer requires parental consent to be issued a U.S. passport was raised from 14 to 16 years old.  Consent will be required from each parent named on the child's birth certificate. Raising the age requirement from 14 to 16 is intended to address the troubling issue of abducted and runaway children and now makes U.S. passport age requirements consistent with the age requirements in the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.
We do not anticipate the introduction of this regulation to impact our ability to process passport applications but we do encourage all applicants to bear this new regulation in mind when planning overseas travel or renewing their passports.
Please see our passport pages for more information about renewing a child's U.S. passport.
