Step 2 - Make appointment for interview:
All first-time nonimmigrant visa applicants aged 14 to 79 are required to appear at the Consulate General in Auckland for a personal interview. Those under 14 and over 79, some applicants renewing their visas, as well as all official and diplomatic travelers on official business, are exempt from the personal appearance requirement and may apply for their visa by mail.
To make an appointment, you can either use our online appointment calendar, or call the U.S. Visa Information Service on 0900 US VISA (0900 878 472). Please note that the Visa Information Service is a toll call and is not available from all phone lines. If you have a toll bar or are calling from outside New Zealand, and you are unable to use the online appointment calendar, you may have a friend or relative make an appointment on your behalf.
In certain circumstances, you can request an expedited appointment if there is not an available appointment as early as you need. If you meet any of the following criteria, please call the U.S. Visa Information Service and ask for an expedited appointment:
To attend the funeral of an immediate family member;
Medical emergency;
Fulbright scholars;
Member of cultural group replacing an original member due to illness/unforeseen contingency;
J1 and F1 visa applicants who received DS-2019 or I-20 form less than 14 days before program is due to start;
Unexpected, time sensitive business travel significant to U.S. economic interest;
Journalists traveling to cover fast-breaking news.
Please note: If you are coming to New Zealand from the Pacific Islands to apply for your visa, please be sure to make an appointment before arranging your travel. The New Zealand consular district includes New Zealand, Samoa and the Cook Islands. Residents of Tonga should apply in the U.S. Embassy in Suva, Fiji, which has responsibility for Tonga. For more information on applying for a visa at the U.S. Embassy in Apia, please visit their web site.
