Kylee Maloney is the first international recipient of the “Voice Awards” sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Ms Maloney, who is blind and has experienced mental illness, won the award for her work as producer and presenter of One In Five, National Radio’s disability issues programme broadcast on National Radio on Sunday evenings.

The award recognizes entertainment industry writers and producers who have given a voice to people with mental health problems by incorporating empathetic and accurate portrayals of mental health issues in their work. It is a quite prestigious award and other recipients include ER, Larry King, Scrubs and Monk. To find out more visit the SAMHSA website. When the U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand, William McCormick, heard about the award he decided that it was appropriate to have a small event at the Embassy to mark Kylee's achievement. He presented her with a trophy and a certificate. The response was overwhelming with over 50 people attending the presentation, including Minister of Disability Issues, Hon. Ruth Dyson.
