February, 2006

Dr Roy Ferguson presented with a gift

Dr Roy Ferguson, New Zealand’s Ambassador to the US, receives a gift from Suzanne Snively, Chairperson of Fulbright New Zealand, with his wife Dawn Ferguson looking on.

On Wednesday 1 February, the Board and staff members of Fulbright New Zealand farewelled Dr Roy Ferguson, the next New Zealand Ambassador to the United States.  As a 1972 Fulbright New Zealand Graduate Student, Roy Ferguson studied for an MA in International Relations at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He graduated in August 1973 with an "outstanding" academic record. While in America, he met and married Dawn Maurer. Upon returning to New Zealand, Roy soon found work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commencing January 1973. Roy joined the Fulbright New Zealand Board in March 2002, having been appointed Director of the Americas Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. At his first meeting he recalled his privilege in meeting Senator J William Fulbright at the New Zealand Embassy in Washington, DC in 1993.  Roy served on various Board sub-committees over the four years, as well as the Ian Axford (NZ) Fellowships Board. Fulbright New Zealand Board Chairperson, Suzanne Snively, said at the farewell that it was ‘a bittersweet occasion because on the one hand we were sad that Roy would no longer be with us in New Zealand working so hard for the Fulbright programme yet on the other hand we were happy that he was going to be in this important role and continue to serve us well in the US’.
