This event was hosted by Mr. Tim Barnett MP, chairman of the 2005 Justice and Electoral Reform Committee which called for the Ministry of Education to step up local citizenship education.

The New Zealand Diversity Action Programme, facilitated by Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres, was a co-sponsor of the 2006 Citizenship Education Network event, together with Local Government New Zealand and the United States Embassy.

Local Government New Zealand established an inter-departmental working party in 2005 to consider options for establishing a programme of citizenship education in New Zealand schools. Its work programme for 06-07 includes a mandate to “participate in, and lead as required inter-agency teams necessary to develop resources for the promotion of active citizenship”.

The video conference was provided with the assistance of the U.S. Embassy, with the California-based Center for Civic Education - Video conference with Charles Quigley, Executive Director, The Center for Civic Education, California, USA. The discussion that followed enabled attendees to exchange ideas on the current situation and outlook for citizenship education in NZ.
