Ambassador McCormick welcomed more than 100 distinguished guests to his residence Monday, December 4, for the opening of the Art in Embassies exhibit entitled ‘Lands of the People” and consisting of a unique collection of Native American and Maori art.
The exhibition includes 24 objects representing 18 tribes from across the United States, loaned by the Portland Art Museum, and examples of contemporary Native American art from the McCormicks’ personal collection. Leading New Zealand contemporary Maori artist (and former Fulbright grantee) Darcy Nicolas also contributed to the exhibition with items from his collection of contemporary Maori artwork.
Tuesday morning’s edition of The Dominion Post featured a large photo and story on the opening displayed prominently above the fold on the inside front page. Radio New Zealand also covered the event, as did film crews for Te Karere (TVNZ’s Maori news program) and for documentaries for Maori television and a festival.
